Mike Dailey, 74, of Custer, SD, passed away November 3, 2024.  Mike was born October 6, 1950, to Milo and Margaret Dailey in Des Moines, IA.  He  lived in Coon Rapids, IA where he attended grade school and later moved to Mitchell, SD where he attended grade school. His mother was killed in a car accident when he was 9 and his father married Barbara Belmont. The family moved to Cambridge, MA where his father attended the Episcopal Theological Seminary. From there they moved to Algona, IA where he graduated high school. They moved to Deadwood, SD where his father was the Episcopal Priest. Mike attended Black Hills State, graduating cum laude from National American University.

He moved to Custer, SD in 1970 where he married Peggy O'Connor, they had two boys, Dave and Chris. They moved to Yankton where he started his law enforcement career. His first police position was at Beresford, SD. They moved back to Custer where he was a deputy sheriff. He married in 1983 to Janet Weber, and they had one daughter, Jennifer. In 1987, he moved to Hill City where he was deputy sheriff for Pennington County.  He was sergeant of civil and warrants.  He was involved in the domestic violence program and traveled throughout the state teaching police officers and deputies. He also taught civil process to police department officers and deputies throughout the state. He retired in 2012. He loved his law enforcement career and thought the world of his law enforcement family and enjoyed working with all of them.

Mike's hobbies included motorcycling, ATV riding, camping, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, but mostly he enjoyed the comradery.

He is survived by his wife Jan of Custer; two sons, Dave (Tiffany) of Sturgis; Chris (Angie) of Custer; and one daughter, Jennifer Dailey Hopkins, MN; 5 grandsons, one sister, Becky (John) Thurston, of Corpus Christie, TX; and one brother James of Seattle, WA.

Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 23, 2024, at Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Custer. Committal services will follow at Custer Cemetery.
