Nichlous "Nick" Joseph Bogner was born on May 13, 1932, to Nicholas A. and Rose F. (Janzing) Bogner in Oelrichs, SD.

Nick was born to two homesteaders into the heart of the Great Depression. His education began in a one-room prairie school. His formal education ended during his freshman year in high school as his father fell ill and his help was needed on the ranch. He grew up both farming and raising cattle. His work ethic was second to none.

As a young man, he played town team baseball. It was at these games where he met the woman he loved for many years and the mother of his children, Barbara Perreault of Smithwick, SD. They were married in 1957. Four children were born of this union.

Nick had an attachment to the land and a pride in ownership that he passed on to his children. He was an improver and sought to leave every place better than he found it. He won numerous stewardship awards.

He was a cowboy and cattleman. He was a self taught geneticist, nutritionist and veterinarian. He anticipated annual brandings, cattle drives and fall cattle sales. Many times he said that he couldn't imagine doing anything else and he genuinely meant it.

Nick was an avid hunter, trapper and rock hound. He was passionate about aviation. He flew thousands of hours in his small plane and gave many rides to neighbors, family friends and grandchildren.

Family was the priority for Nick. He emphasized protecting each other and being there for each other. He fostered a faith in a loving God and he modeled helping those in need.

Nick Bogner, 94, died June 30, 2026 in Rapid City, SD. He is survived by his former wife and the mother of his children, Barbara Perreault Bogner of Smithwick, SD; his daughter Rose (Allen) Harlan of Bassett, NE; and his three sons, Nicholaus Bogner of Oelrichs, SD; Michael (Lisette) Bogner of Hot Springs, SD, and John Bogner of Oelrichs, SD. He is also survived by grandchildren Jennifer (Kevin) Bruzelius, Rose (Brent) Rowan, Duane (Jessica) Harlan, Angela Harlan; and great grandchildren Bayle, Andrew, Ansley and Abigail; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Rose Bogner; by his sisters Marie Piper and Delores Muhm; and his brother Eugene Bogner.

Visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Hot Springs, SD.

Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Hot Springs followed by committal service at Hillside Cemetery in Oelrichs, SD.
