Nicholas V. Schmaltz, age 67, of Custer, SD, passed away February 1, 2017, peacefully at his home in Custer.
Nick was born September 29, 1949, in Belle Fourche, SD, to Vincent and Loretta (Didier) Schmaltz. Nick was raised in Belle Fourche and graduated high school in 1967. He worked in the Parts Department in Belle Fourche, Deadwood, and Newcastle, then in 1979, purchased his own auto parts store earning the title of NAPA Nick. He loved his family, cars, motorcycles, and traveling the beautiful USA. On October 21, 1978, Nick married Betty (Burr) in Belle Fourche, SD. Together they raised two sons, Roger and Vince. Nick was active in the Boy Scouts, St. John's Catholic Church, and a life member of Harley Owners Group,
Nick is survived by his wife, Betty of 38 years, 2 sons, Roger (Desaray) with 3 grandchildren (Alexander, Ashley, and Caleb) of Clear Lake, SD, and Vince of Sturgis, SD. His sister Vicki (Gary) French of Wayne, NE. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., February 7, 2017, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Father Grant Gerlach will be officiating. Interment will be at the Custer Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
