Oliver Charles Harris of Hot Springs, SD passed away December 7th at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home in Hot Springs at the age of 92.
Oliver was born April 28, 1916, to Phillip and Theresa (Sherman) Harris in Gordon NE. He attended Gordon High School and graduated in 1935. He worked on the family farm until May of 1942 when he was drafted in the Army Air Corp. Oliver served in the Air Corp until February of 1946 as an Air Traffic Controller. He was stationed at Lubbock and Pampa, TX; the Philippines; and in Japan.
Oliver married Genevieve Mulcahy March 15, 1943. After his discharge from the Air Corp, they owned a farm south of Hay Springs, NE. They moved to Hot Springs in 1959 and he worked at the VA Hospital until his retirement in 1980. Oliver enjoyed fishing, camping, and wood working.
Oliver was preceded in death by six brothers, seven sisters, two grandchildren, Jay Allen Harris and Leslie Ann Harris as well as one great grandchild, Zane Harris.
Oliver is survived by his wife, Genevieve, of Hot Springs; three sons, Alvin Harris and his wife Dayle of Beaver OK, Leonard Harris and his wife Bonnie of Gordon, NE; Timothy Harris and his wife Patricia of Hot Springs; eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
The Harris family would like to thank the staff of the community living ward at the VA Medical Center and the Alzheimer's ward at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Home for the excellent care and support that they provided Oliver.
A visitation will held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 10, 2008 from at McColley's Chapels of The Hills in Hot Springs.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 11, 2008 at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Hot Springs with Pastor Jake Jacobson officiating. Interment will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery. Military Honors are being provided by the Hot Springs Veterans Honor Guard.
A memorial has been established in Oliver's name to benefit the Bethesda Lutheran School in Hot Springs.
