Oliver Max Romey, 88 passed away Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at the Ponderosa Villa in Crawford, Nebraska. After being diagnosed in October 2011 with Alzheimer's disease, he became a resident at the assisted living when his health began to fail. Oliver was in Hospice care at the time of his death.
Oliver was born Oct. 7, 1925 in Scotts Bluff Co. NE in a sod house. His family later moved to Heppner, S.D. where they homesteaded and he attended grade school at Maitland School. Oliver attended half a year at the Edgemont High School. He worked on various ranches until marrying Edith Osmotherly on Dec. 6, 1951, in Hot Springs. To this union were born five children, Marilyn (Greg) Dueker, Jeannette (Howard) Heinert, John (Tracy) Romey, Susan (Robert) Laughlin, and Nadine Horner.
Oliver continued to work on various ranches until he and Edith started ranching south of Oelrichs, S.D. in 1957.
He was active on the Oelrichs Volunteer Fire Department, and the Oelrichs Rodeo Club. He was an avid supporter of Fall River County 4-H. Oliver was passionate about horses, the cattle industry, cribbage, pitch, horseshoes, and visiting neighbors. He was a jokester and a story teller. Oliver was never one to let the facts get in the way of a good story.
Oliver is survived by his wife and children, fifteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and one brother, Donald Romey. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gustave and Julia (Peterson) Romey; three sisters, Margaret, Mildred and Maxine; three brothers, Robert, Kenneth and Leon; and one grandchild, Jason Laughlin.
A memorial has been established in Oliver's name for the Alzheimer's Foundation and donations may be sent care of McColley's Chapels of the Hills.
There will be no visitation. Rev. Paul Smith will officiate funeral services at McColley's Chapels of the Hills in Hot Springs, at 2:00 pm on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, with the burial following at the Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.
