Orville Lesley Streets of Custer, SD, one day before his 89th birthday, passed away on October 10, 2008 at Custer Regional Senior Care Center in Custer. He was born October 11, 1919 at Yankton, SD, the fifth of eight sons and two daughters of George and Nancy Streets.
As a young man he worked in the timber industry with his brothers until he entered the Army in 1942. He served during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded in bronze star for heroism and exemplary conduct in ground combat.
Returning to Custer after discharge from the Army in 1945 he again worked in the timber. He married Virginia Trenham on June 25, 1950. They made their home in the Custer area and had five children. He worked at O'Connor's Sawmill from 1962 until his retirement.
He was a gentle, kind man with a great sense of humor. He enjoyed being with his family, the outdoors including hunting and fishing, as well as carpentry. He loved telling stories about his childhood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia of Custer, and by five children, David (Deb) of Custer; Karen (Bernie) Mines of Monroe, WA; Susan (Jim) Keiderling of Gillette, WY; Pamela (Howard) Fitzner of Grand Junction, CO; Lorie Yauney of Hamilton, GA. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer with Forrest Lewis officiating. Interment will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
