Obituary

It may be by Paul's death we can reach others with the great news of eternal life through Jesus !

Paul with his favorite niece, Gigi!

Paul Peter Grieder, age 55, went to be with his Lord and Savior August 20, 2018.  Paul, an honorably discharged Navy veteran, died in his home in Hot Springs, SD.   He was the owner of Pauly's Milspec Army Surplus store on North River Street, Hot Springs, SD.

Paul was born and grew up in Deer Park, Long Island, NY.    His father, Mark, was born in Basel, Switzerland.  His mother, Ellen, is first generation American; her parents were born in the Oslo-Arendal area of Norway.

Paul was an Antisubmarine Radar Operator with the AW Air Crew, U.S. Navy.  They flew to many faraway places.    He served from 1984 to 1988.  After his service in the Navy Paul graduated from the University of Utah with a 4-yr. Accounting degree.   Paul loved to ski and was a certified ski instructor at Alta Ski Resort near Salt Lake City, Utah.  He enjoyed teaching the kids; they were his preference!

At age 39 Paul entered Officers' Candidate School, competing with 20-somethings and was successful!   He enjoyed motor cross racing in the Utah desert.  At age 37 he raced 100 miles in the desert; an accomplishment in his age group.  When Paul moved to Aurora, CO, he was a candidate for National Ski Patrol at Arapahoe  Basin in Loveland Pass, CO in 2006.   He attained Field Artillery Officer (Capt.) in CO Army National Guard.   Paul was a Contracting Officer at U.S. Dept. of Defense working at Buckley Air Force Base, Aurora, CO.

Paul loved his animals. He had 2 cats.   His last dog was  a yellow Lab mix named Jarrah.   Paul's parents Corky and Ellen puppy-raised Jarrah for Canine Companions for a year.  When he didn't pass C.C.'s standards, Paul adopted him.   Jarrah lived for over l6 years!

Paul was well read, and a conversation with him was always interesting.   He was a tender-hearted man.  What I am now finding out from Facebook is that Paul was loved by many people   We miss him so very much.

He never married and is survived by his Mom, Ellen and second-Dad, Corky Schreyer of McClure, Pa.   Surviving Paul, also, are his brother, Andrew, wife Raana and two nephews, Nicholas and Alexander, and one niece, Gabriella Ellen of Phoenix, AZ.  He was preceded in death by his father, Mark.

Written by Paul's mom, Ellen

All are welcome to join for a memorial service 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, at Southern Hills Evangelical Free Church, 1509 University Ave., in Hot Springs, with Pastor Mark Crossman officiating.

Ellen's Testimony to God's Goodness:

April 10, 2017, Paul was speaking with second-dad Corky and mom Ellen's pastor Mallonee on the phone.   The result:  Paul prayed in his own words acceptance of Jesus as his Savior.    Paul was in so much emotional pain with the depression he had, and yet, the last phone call Ellen had with him two weeks before he died,  Paul confidently said   "I love God.  God is good to me."   I told him how happy I was to hear that.

When the coroner called Tuesday, August 28, I was devastated.    A few days later, when I was opening mail from The Tract League I read one of the sample tracts:  1 Corinthians 2:9, " Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him." Paul had professed his love of God to me and now God was assuring me that Paul is in heaven with his Jesus, no more pain, only joy !   I am so thankful to God for this.

With Joy, Ellen Schreyer, Paul's mom
