Obituary

Paul Albert Schuchardt, of Hot Springs, SD, died November 22, 2016, at the age of 82. He was born in Leola, SD to his parents, Albert C. Schuchardt and LaVerne B. (Pierce) Schuchardt, where he spent his early childhood. One of his favorite memories from that time was going fishing and pheasant hunting after school. His family later moved to Breckinridge, MN, where he enjoyed participating in football, basketball and American Legion baseball. Many of his teammates from those years remained his life-long friends. He graduated from Breckinridge High School in 1952.

Paul continued his education at South Dakota State University. He played baseball for the Jackrabbits and graduated from the school of Pharmacy in 1956. While at college, he met the love of his life, Jean Noble. They were married on June 9, 1957, at the United Churches in Hot Springs. He served in the United States Air Force and was first stationed in Montgomery, AL, followed by Ellsworth Air Force Base. In 1961, Paul and Jean moved to Hot Springs and he purchased Alarie's Drug Store. In 1966, with the help of many town friends, Paul and Jean moved the drug store merchandise by the shopping cart full from River Street to Jennings Avenue where they opened Paul's Drug. Paul sincerely cared about and enjoyed people. He was truly in his element while working at the store. Through the years, many stories were told and concerns shared during the daily coffee klatches held at the soda fountain.

Paul had a hard work ethic with a giving personality to match. He genuinely valued his customers and always took the time to make sure they left the store with a smile on their face. He made daily deliveries to the elderly and would often stay to visit awhile. He appreciated his employees and years later, was always happy to hear how they were doing in their lives. He had a passionate interest in fostering the growth of the Hot Springs community. He served on the Hot Springs Development Corporation, Elks Club, Bison Boosters, American Legion Post 71, and Masonic Lodge. He happily grilled many a brat for the Rotary Club and served hot dogs and more at several Chamber of Commerce events. He held a deep faith in the Lord and was a 50+ year member of the United Churches where he served on the Board of Trustees.

Paul had a very strong love and sense of pride for his family. He delighted in attending the various activities of his children and later, his grandchildren. His booming, cheering voice was guaranteed at school sporting events and musical concerts. He was grateful for his friends and had many fond memories of golf matches played as well as boating, fishing and hunting excursions.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother and sisters, Marian Freed and Susan Schuchardt.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jean; sons, Jay Schuchardt (Sue), Jon Schuchardt (Vickie); daughter, Sara Blume (Mike); and his grandchildren, Elie and Mica Schuchardt; Kaitlyn and Nicholas Blume. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 26, 2016, the United Churches of Hot Springs with Pastor Clint Walker officiating. Interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery.
