Obituary

Paul C. Spieker, of Custer, South Dakota, passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2025, in Custer.

Paul was born on March 4, 1947, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, a chapter of his life that reflected the steady strength and quiet patriotism he carried throughout the years.

To know Paul was to feel cared for. He was patient, generous, hardworking, creative, and deeply skilled—a man who could figure things out, fix what needed fixing, and make you laugh while he did it. Above all, he was an adored Grandpa with a great sense of humor and a laugh you won't forget. His kindness was real and constant, his brilliance showed in both big and small ways, and his love for his family was the truest thing about him.

Paul earned his business degree from Dakota State University and built a dedicated career with Northwestern Bell/CenturyLink, which allowed him to enjoy early retirement—and the freedom to fully pursue the passions and interests that brought him so much joy.

On August 31, 1968, he married the love of his life, Valerie (Langrock) Spieker, and together they built a family and a lifetime of memories rooted in devotion and partnership.

Paul loved woodcarving, riding motorcycles, sailing, hunting, traveling, and—most of all—spending time with his family. He showed up for the people he loved, not just in the big moments, but in the everyday ways that mattered most: a steady presence, a helping hand, a well-timed joke, and a deep belief in taking care of one another.

Paul was preceded in death by his father, Charles Spieker; his mother, Marian (Keltgen) Spieker; his sister, Mary (Spieker) Ketcham; and his brother, James Spieker.

He is survived by his wife, Valerie (Langrock) Spieker; his daughters, Patricia (Spieker) Flaherty and Jacqueline (Spieker) Gaudreault; his sister, Karlene; his brother, John Spieker; and his six grandchildren, who brought him endless pride and joy.
