Obituary

Paula Katheryn Tonemah, 57, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away October 6, 2015, at the Rapid City Regional Hospice House in Rapid City, SD.

Paula was born March 4, 1958, in Bitburg, Germany, to Cosme and Loretta (Williams) Morales. The daughter of Air Force parents, she grew up around the world. She graduated from Western Hills High School in 1975 in Fort Worth, TX. In her younger adult years, Paula was a professional musician, working for Texas Recording Studios and performing at various venues throughout Texas.

In the 90's, Paula changed careers to drug and alcohol counseling and eventually became director of the American Indian Center, a facility for Native Americans to seek treatment for addiction. A leader in the local community, she organized pow-wows and various other educational and community programs. Paula also created the Native American Studies program for the Fort Worth ISD, which teaches school children the history and culture of native peoples. This program still exists today.

In 2003, she moved to Hot Springs, with husband, Larry, to pursue a career as an artist and author. Over the years Paula won many awards throughout the state for her oil painting, bead work and leather work. She spent a number of years at Crazy Horse Mountain, selling her jewelry and books. She wrote 2 children's books," Spirit Horse: An Adventure in Crazy Horse Country", "The Animals Talk", and a cookbook, "Recipes from the Powwow Trail". In 2012, Paula created the Scarf it Up Project – Bags of Courage, that collected scarves and hats to be given free of charge to breast cancer patients in the Fall River area.

Paula is survived by husband, Larry Pratt; daughter, Crystal Miller of Fort Worth, TX; sister, Cheri Jetton of Houston, TX; two brothers, Dennis Morales of Magnolia Springs, AL; Michael Morales of Grand Rapids, MI; many nieces and nephews; as well as a great many friends.

A Celebration of Paula's life will be held at Larry's residence, 306 Thompson Avenue beginning at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 24, 2015.
