Obituary

Philip Francis McCauley, 78, of Hot Springs, died December 7, 2009 at Fall River Hospital in Hot Springs, SD.

Proud of his Celtic heritage, he was born to Irish immigrant parents, Philip & Elizabeth McCauley on May 28, 1931, in East Side Hospital on Manhattan Island in NY. As a child, he lived in New York City, NY; Lynn, MA; & New Rochelle, NY.

In 1948, Philip joined the New York State Guard (7th Regiment) & in 1949, the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, and Amarillo Air Force Base in Amarillo, TX. In 1953, Philip moved to Lubbock & then Bryan, TX, where he attended Texas Tech and Texas A & M majoring in Oceanography & Meteorology. In 1956, Philip moved to Los Alamos, NM, where he worked as a police officer for the city & a security guard at the US Atomic Energy Commission. In 1962 he moved to Lakewood & then Denver, CO, where he received a BA & MA in Library Science from Denver University.

His career as Technical Librarian at Philips Petroleum Company brought him to Bartlesville, OK, in 1966, & in 1968 he became Director of the Devereaux Library at the School of Mines & Tech in Rapid City, SD, where he was also their Curator & Archivist.
In 1987 he met & committed his life & love to Marsha Miller of Rapid City, SD. Marsha & Philip moved to Casper, WY, in 1990 & then to Hot Springs in 2008.
Throughout his career, Philip was active in many research, historical, & civic organizations & councils. He was VP of the Friends of the Leland D. Case Library for Western Historical Studies & the Rocky Mt. Bibliographical Center for Research; chairman on projects & committees for the American Society of Test Materials, the academy section of SD Library Assoc; member of the Special Libraries Assoc, Advisory Council for the SD State Library Commission, special commission on flood damaged libraries for the American Library Assoc., International Assoc. of Bridge & Structural Engineering, the Academy of Political Science, the American Management Assoc., and the Minnilusa Historical Assoc. He was also a state wing administrative officer for the Civil Air Patrol, an instructor for Casper, WY's Senior Center 55 Alive program, & contributor to the senior's newsletter at the Casper, WY, Senior Center.

Philip was listed in the 1972-73 edition of Who's Who in the Midwest.

Philip was also active in church serving as a Jr. Warden at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Bartlesville, OK; a vestryman & Sr. Warden at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rapid City, SD; & State Director of the Thunderhead Episcopal Center.

Philip & Marsha enjoyed dancing together & participated in local square dancing clubs.

Philip is survived by Marsha Miller of Hot Springs; his children, Kathy (Ron) Buck of Littleton, CO; Maury (Khosrow) Golshan of Laguna Beach, CA; Debbie Clum of Aurora, CO; Michael (Donna) McCauley of Rapid City, SD; his step-children, Joe (Sue) Miller of Yelm, WA; Sam (Shannon) Miller, of Columbia, MO; Tracy Ohlendorf of Maple Grove, MN; Dan (Cindy) Miller of Piedmont, SD; nineteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorials in Philip's name may be sent to the Fall River Hospital in Hot Springs.
