Obituary

Phyllis Ion (Seaman) Nowlan, 89, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away, October 1, 2017, at the Rapid City Regional Hospice House in Rapid City, SD.

Phyllis was born September 7, 1928, in Ft. Dodge, IA, to Richard and Myrtle (Evenson) Seaman. She grew up on a farm outside of West Bend, IA, and graduated from Bradgate High School in 1946. Phyllis then moved to Omaha to attend secretarial school and waitressed to support herself. She met a young highway patrol officer, Gerald Nowlan, at the diner, where she worked and they were married on May 3, 1947. The couple returned to the Nowlan family ranch south of Whitney, NE and had one son, Richard 'Rocky' in 1956, in Crawford, NE. They purchased Fall River Auto in 1971, and made their home in Hot Springs.

Phyllis had two passions in life, gardening and serving God through service to others. She was active in the P.E.O., Shakespeare Club, Christmas in the Hills, Tour of Homes, Miss South Dakota and other clubs as well as volunteering for her church and at the Hot Springs Food Pantry.

Phyllis is survived by her son, Richard 'Rocky' (Robin) Nowlan; three grandsons, Zachariah (Linda) Nowlan; Joshua Nowlan; Abraham (Molly) Nowlan; four great grandchildren, Eric, Ryan, Keysha and Jayden.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald; and brother, Richard 'Bud' Seaman.

Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at The United Churches with Rev. Dr. John Pehrson officiating. Committal services will be held 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Hot Springs Food Pantry, C/O Ministerial Association, P.O. Box 73, Hot Springs, SD 57747.
