Richard Eugene Campbell, 69, of Custer, SD, passed away January 20, 2010, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Hot Springs, SD.
Richard was born at home in Anselmo, NE, on November 1, 1940, to Roy and Ruby (Ballenger) Campbell where his family resided for a few years after his birth. The family then moved to North Bend, OR. Richard graduated from high school in North Bend and joined the Air Force November 23, 1959. He was honorably discharged October 2, 1963.
He moved back to NE in the late sixties and lived in Grand Island for several years working in the construction business. He married Shelia Henderson in 1974 in Grand Island to this union one son was born and in 1975 they moved to Broken Bow, NE. Richard later moved to Florida for several years to be near his sister; in 1999 he moved to Custer, SD, where he worked as a Certified Nurse Assistant and did handy man jobs. In 2003 Richard was awarded Veteran of the Month for saving a fellow veteran from chocking.
Richard enjoyed camping, fishing, watching football, crossword puzzles and was an avid reader.
He is survived by one son, Shane (Lynn) Campbell of Giltner, NE; one sister, Sharon (Darrell) Roth of Cocoa Beach, FL; and two granddaughters, Madison and Mylie Campbell.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Ruby and Roy, and his brother, William (Bill).
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 23, 2010, at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer with Pastor Mark Crossman officiating. Interment will take place at a later date next to his parents at New Helena Cemetery near Merna, NE.
