Obituary

Richard L. “Rick ‘Red Eagle’” McLaughlin, 79

Richard L. McLaughlin, known to many as Rick “Red Eagle,” passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home in Hot Springs, South Dakota. He was 79 years old.

Rick was born on December 30, 1946, in Mobridge, South Dakota, to Virginia Good Elk McLaughlin and Pat McLaughlin. He was a proud member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.

On July 11, 1968, Rick entered the United States Army at Fort Yates, North Dakota. He served two years as a combat engineer and infantryman, including service in Vietnam. During his time in the Army, he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and distinctions as Marksman with Pistol and Expert with Rifle. He was also a member of the VFW. His service to his country was carried with quiet strength.

After returning home, Rick lived close to the land. He broke horses and spent much of his life outdoors, where he felt most at ease. He loved horses deeply. He loved his cat, Church. He loved the open air and the steady rhythm of nature. He sang Lakota songs and carried those traditions with him.

Rick liked to laugh. He enjoyed conversation and companionship, especially in recent years at the State Veterans Home, where he formed meaningful friendships with Budd and Bob. They shared stories and laughter together.

Those who knew Rick will remember his humor, his love of the outdoors, and the steady presence he carried through his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia Good Elk McLaughlin and Pat McLaughlin.

He is survived by his children and grandchildren.

Services will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026.

May he journey onward with strength and freedom.

The sacred eagle rises and carries the spirit home.
