Richard Bernard 'Dick' Shively, age 87, of Hot Springs, SD passed away October 13, 2008 at Rpaid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD.
Dick was born July 4, 1921 in Cleveland, OH to Carroll and Ruth (Smith) Shively.
He grew up in Mentor On The Lake, OH and graduated from Mentor High School in 1940. Dick was awarded a football scholarship and attended Kent State University in Kent, OH until 1942 when he enlisted in the Navy as a medic and served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. In 1945 after his discharge from the Navy, Dick continued his education attending DePaul University and Northern Illinois State University earning his BS Degree. In 1974 after attending SDSU, Brookings and Northern State University, Aberdeen, he earned his Masters Degree. Dick had a successful career as a school teacher and principal in Blue Mound, IL; Chicago, IL; Palatine, IL, Spencer, SD; McLaughlin, SD and Edgemont, SD. After his retirement from Edgemont school in 1986 Dick moved to Hot Springs, SD.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Georgana, mother of his children and infant son.
Survivors include his wife, Leta of Hot Springs; son, John (Sheri) Shively of Sioux Falls, SD; two daughters, Jayne (Dale) Reid of Spearfish, SD; Patricia (Fernando) Augustine of Hot Springs; one brother, Carroll (Helen) Shively of Mt. Prospect, IL; three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Wake/Rosary services will be held 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 16, 2008 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Hot Springs.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 17, 2008 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Hot Springs with Father Peter Kovarik officiating. Interment will take place 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 17, 2008 at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
