Rita Jean Hamilton, age 68, of Custer, South Dakota, formerly of Norfolk, Nebraska, died on January 27, 2015, at the Custer Regional Hospital in Custer.
Rita was born in Yankton, South Dakota, on June 11, 1946, to Gene and Rita (Schulte) Stevens. She was the oldest of nine children. She grew up in the Hartington area and graduated from Cedar Catholic High School in 1964. She married Merlin Hamilton on February 19, 1966. They lived most of their married life raising their family in Norfolk. Rita was employed by Sherwood Medical and Creekwood Chiropractic in Norfolk. Upon their retirement, they moved to their favorite place on earth, Custer, South Dakota. There, she worked at Custer Regional Senior Care.
Rita was a loving wife, mother, and grandma. She loved socializing with family and friends. She was an outstanding cook, known far and wide for her fried chicken and "one of a kind" potato salad. She enjoyed baking, reading, sewing, four-wheeling, camping, and feeding "Old Mom", a doe that has come to her back porch every morning and evening for the past eight years.
Rita is survived by her husband, Merlin Hamilton of Custer; daughter, Mindy and Dan Bare of Lincoln; daughter, Lori and Randall Coffin and their children Abbey and Elley of Norfolk; son, Bob and Steph Hamilton and their children Colby, Brody, and Carli of Battle Creek, NE; brothers, Steve and Jan Stevens of Columbus, NE; Joe and Joyce Stevens of Indianapolis, IN; Chuck and Sheilah Stevens of Indianapolis, IN; sisters, Peg and Bob Brandt of Florida; Kate and Steve Winkleman of Limon, CO; Pat Ticknor of Wisconsin Rapids, WI; brothers-in-law, Chuck and Susan Juffer of Indianapolis, IN, Terry Kai of Pender, NE, and Arvon and Ann Hamilton of Custer, SD; as well as many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Rita Stevens and sisters, Sue Juffer and Ann Kai.
Memorial services will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 31, 2015, at Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Custer with son-in-law, Pastor Randall Coffin officiating.
