Robert Dean Oberg, age 78, died Thursday, February 17, 2011, at his home in BugTown Gulch, Custer, SD.
Bob was the son of Hans and Martha (Highbe) Oberg, was born on April 11, 1932, in Lemmon, SD. He received his education at Hettinger Public School in Hettinger, ND. Bob entered military service on February 9, 1950. Serving in the Korean War, he received a number of combat commendations including Army Occupation Medal, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, and the United Nation Service Medal. He was honorably discharged from service on April 9, 1953. After returning home, he enrolled at North Dakota State University in Fargo and upon receiving his degree went to work for Hormel. Bob was a long-time member of American Legion Post 46 in Custer, SD, and was also an active member in the VFW. On August 8, 1954, Robert was united in marriage to Margaret Inez Olson at Haynes Congregational Church. To this union four children were born.
Robert was employed as livestock buyer for Hormel and retired in 1987. After retiring, Bob moved to Custer with Pat Davis. Together they enjoyed riding and driving horses as well as entertaining friends. He had many visitors and liked to tour them around the Hills, God's country to him. He called himself a "Professional Tourist". He also looked forward to meeting "the guys" for breakfast on Thursday mornings, playing cards, and dominos. Bob was an avid reader of western novels and enjoyed all western movies and T.V. shows. Bob also volunteered for many years at the Atlantic Mountain Camp.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, several siblings, and their respective spouses.
Robert is survived by his life partner, Pat; children, David (Lisa), Dennis (Frances), Cheryl (Don), and Carrie (Peter); four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, as well as Pat's children, Pam (Kenneth), Lisa (Jamie) and their three children respectively; and sister Joan Hoffman and brother-in-law Roger Hegre; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will start at 10:00 a.m. and will include a celebration of life service at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer with Pastor Morris Nelson officiating. Interment will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
