Robert J. 'Bobby' Evans, of Custer, SD passed away June 21, 2013, at the Custer Regional Hospital in Custer.
Bobby was born in Custer on August 30, 1928, to Robert and Grace (O'Connor) Evans. In 1945, he joined the U.S. Navy and served until his honorable discharge and return to Custer in 1949. In 1958, Bobby married JoAnn (Lacey) Evans and they moved to Newcastle, WY, where Bobby worked for Johnson Fuel Liners. In 1968, he returned to Custer where he owned and operated Custer Gas Service. After retirement Bobby spent time in Arizona with great neighbors and friends. In the summer months he worked part time at Rocky Knolls Golf Course.
Bobby loved life and had a great sense of humor. He loved sports and he was an avid Custer Wildcat and Denver Broncos fan. One of his favorite pastimes was watching his beloved grandsons play football and baseball.
Bobby is survived by his wife, JoAnn of Custer; son, Greg (Carole) Evans of Pierre, SD; daughter, Terri (Ed) Meierkort, Celebration, FL; grandsons, Reid and Chayse; special nephew, Ryan Lacey; great grandsons, Jace and Zayden; sisters, Pauline Goodwin of Custer; Betty Weig of Rapid City, SD; Jerry Burrow of El Sobrante, CA; mother-in-law, Esther Lacey of Custer; brother Ronnie (Judy) Lacey of Cheyenne, WY, as well as numerous other nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law, Ed Lacey and granddaughter, Casey Crane.
A social gathering to honor and reminisce will be held from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Monday, June 24, 2013, at the Rocky Knolls Golf Course.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at Custer Lutheran Fellowship near Custer with Pastor Tom Opoien and Pastor Kent Narum officiating.
Committal services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
Memorials have been established in Bobby's name to benefit either the Custer Lutheran Fellowship or the Custer Volunteer Fire Department.
