Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Roland March announces his peaceful passing on September 22, 2025, surrounded by family at the age 84.

Roland Neal March was born on August 19,1941, in Hot Springs, South Dakota to his mother Eva Reed and father Richard March. From an early age, Roland worked alongside his family on the March Dairy and Ranch, learning values of hard work and dedication. He worked on the family operation until he graduated in 1959 from Hot Springs High School to go onto National Guard training, staying active for 10 years.

In the fall of 1960, he began the start of his career with the United States Postal Office to which he followed the creed of "neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds" for over 30 years. After faithfully completing his mail route, often covering 12 miles or even more, he would return home to work the family ranch. Roland never complained about the work, showing the quiet strength and dedication that defined his entire life. The early start of his postal carrier career also included his marriage to Donna May Wortham on March 10, 1961, marking the beginning of their life together.

The Black Hills served as more than a backdrop for their life, Roland and Donna would continue his long legacy on the March Ranch while raising their sons, Tony and Terry, with the later addition of three nieces and a nephew. In the midst of raising and chasing six children around the ranch and down the road to rodeos, both Roland and Donna found time to enter rodeos for themselves. Roland steer wrestled and calf roped while Donna chased barrels; passing the gift of rodeo to their children and grandchildren, along with many other youths they encountered over the years, leaving an inspiring and lasting heritage.

As the children grew up to be adults and started their own families, Roland would fulfill his career at the United States Postal Service on October 2, 1992, and his path continued on the ranch, where he poured himself into the land he loved, remaining at it until his body could no longer keep pace with his spirit. Never to be one with idle hands, following his retirement he went to work for Warren Transportation and Johnson trucking, driving semi-trucks. Following this new direction of life in a semi, he would go on to haul thousands of miles to help set his son Tony and wife Kims' new trucking business in motion for years to come.

Roland's deep, slow chuckle and somber stroll that was paired with silent commitment to his family and the ranch he cherished left a lasting gentle and kind impression on all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Albert and Bertha March; his parents Eva Reed and Richard March; a brother and two sisters; as well as his niece, Evelyn Schrader Hohn.

Roland is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Donna; his eldest son Tony and wife Kim, with their daughters Lacey Jo, Brandy, and Cassidy; and his youngest son Terry and wife Ivy, with daughter Madison and sons Colton and Logan. He is also survived by nephews John Schrader and family, Rick and CeCe March, and niece Brenda Simpson.
