Roy Horton McKown, age 96, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away on March 25, 2015, at the Seven Sisters Nursing Home in Hot Springs.
Roy was born on March 21, 1919, in Hastings, IA, to Frank H. and Maime E. (Clark) McKown. At an early age the family moved to Miller, SD. Roy Graduated in 1938. In March 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, He landed and fought at Utah Beach and saw duty at Bastogne, the Rhineland and throughout central Europe. Roy received 5 bronze stars and was honorably discharged in March, 1946.
Upon returning to Miller, Roy was in a terrible car accident and was nursed back to health by a beautiful young nurse, Ardith Moon. Roy and Ardith were married on October 10, 1946, in St. Lawrence, SD. They lived on various farms around Miller before Roy became a printer and newspaperman. He worked at the newspapers in: Mitchell, Bridgewater and Phillip, SD. Roy purchased the Edgemont Herald in August, 1963. In 1974, Roy sold the paper to his son Marlin. He then went to work at the VA Hospital until 1979, when he and Ardith retired. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion in Edgemont.
He is survivors by his son, Michael McKown of Custer, SD; daughters, Ellen (Charlie) Heafner of Hot Springs, SD; Barbara (Randy) Barkley of Riverside, CT; Judith (Art) Licht of Gillette, WY; daughter-in-law, JoAnn McKown of Gillette, WY; sister-in-law, Wanadela Moon of Cherokee, IA; 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.
Roy is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Ardith; son, Marlin; parents, Frank and Maime McKown; brothers, Wayne; Galen; Durle; Donald; sister, Loraine; 3 brother in laws; and 5 sister in laws.
A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Friday, March 27, 2015, at Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Hot Springs.
Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 30, 2015, at Chamberlain McColley's Funeral home. Interment will follow 2:30 p.m., Monday, March 30, 2015, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain-McColley's Funeral Home in Hot Springs.
