Obituary

Roy O Scherer III, age 65, of Custer, SD, passed away July 30, 2012, at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, TX.

Roy was born August 5, 1946 in Pensacola, FL, to Roy O. and Mary D. (Silva) Scherer II. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1965 until his retirement as a Master Sergeant in 1991. From 1991 until 1994 he was employed as a deputy sheriff with the Pennington County Sheriff's Department. In 1994 he became a Deputy Sheriff with the Custer County Sheriff's Department, retiring in 2008 as Chief Deputy. From 2008 until 2010 Roy worked in Law Enforcement for Custer State Park.

When you mention the name Roy Scherer, the most typical response is: "Oh, I know Roy." It's not so much that everyone says it, but how everyone says it. Everyone knew Roy. He was friendly and respectful to everyone he met. He was a devoted husband and a loving father to his children. He was honest and thorough in his duties. He tried to help those in need. He was a take charge kind of man. Over the course of his life, he has been given many awards and citations throughout his military and law enforcement career. He kept it low key and would shy away from recognition. He was a very loved and respected man, but never asked for it. Roy was a good man because it was the right thing to do, not because he thought someone would notice. For anyone who has ever said those words, "Oh, I know Roy", he will be missed very much.

Survivors include his wife, Dearly Beloved Linda C. Scherer of Custer; sons, John (Chrystal) Scherer of Corpus Christi, TX; Donald (Devan) Scherer of Houston, TX; step-son, Troy (Diane) Thiel of Lincoln, CA; step-daughter, Wendy (Kieth) McGregor of Salem, OR; brothers, Paul Scherer of Alameda, CA; Greg Scherer of Pensacola, FL; Roy Scherer IV of Pensacola, FL; Tim Scherer of Pensacola, FL; sister, Terry Scherer of Pensacola, FL; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Roy was preceded in death by his father, Roy O. Scherer II; mother, Mary D. Silva-Poyton and step-father, Donald Paul Poyton.
