Obituary

Ruben S. Hofer, age 87, of Hot Springs, SD passed away May 19, 2008 at Custer Regional Senior Care in Custer, SD.

Ruben was born June 15, 1920 in Beadle County, SD to Paul J. and Elizabeth (Mandel) Hofer. He attended eight years of country school and graduated from Doland High School in 1939. On May 16, 1946 he married Winnie Hofer and they lived on several farms before buying their own in 1961 near Carpenter, SD. Ruben always talked about building his own home and in 1980 after deciding the Black Hills would be a beautiful place to retire, he bought ten acres and divided his time between building his home and farming. In 1999 he retired due to his poor health that led to a terminal diagnosis in 2008.

Ruben was a farmer, rancher and creator. Even after retirement he continued to garden and show his love for animals and birds by making bird feeders and houses. He loved to work with his hands creating wooden toys, picture frames and even his own house which he designed. He was a self taught mechanic and was able to do everything from over hauling engines to welding and repairing equipment. He enjoyed sports, hunting, fishing, hiking, reading about history and spending time with family members. He also spent his evenings listening to gospel music by the Gaither's Men's Quartet.

Ruben is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Winifred 'Winnie' of Hot Springs; three daughters, Arlene (Clif) Mason of Brush, CO; Peggy Fox of Fort Collins, CO; Charlotte Hofer of Fort Collins; one son, Tom (Judy) Hofer of Hot Springs; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Marie Zuvela of Everett, WA and one brother, Melvin (Pearl) Hofer of Huron, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Leon; Menno; Paul; Elmer and one sister, Elsie Decker.

Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 23, 2008 at United Churches in Hot Springs with Pastor Morris Nelson officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.

A memorial has been established in Ruben's name to benefit Hospice of the Hills, 224 Elk St., Rapid City, SD 57701.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs. Written condolences can be made at www.mccolleyschapels.com.
