Sandra K. (Solheim) Hansen was born to Richard and Almina Solheim on May 30, 1940, in Sioux Falls, S.D., and passed away on November 13, 2009, in Hot Springs, S.D.
Sandra was raised on a farm west of Garretson and graduated from Garretson High School in 1958 and Dakota State in 1962. On June 3, 1962, she was united in marriage to Daniel Hansen. To this union three children were born: Scott, Kristine and Kimberly.
Sandra shared the blessings of her life by working in the Sioux Falls School System, Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Montevideo, MN, First Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, and finally as the Director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Sioux Falls. After her "retirement" in 2007, Sandra moved to Hot Springs to be closer to family. Her empathetic and caring approach to people in need led her to volunteer with the Red Cross, R.S.V.P. (Retired Senior Volunteer Program), W.E.A.V.E. (Women Escaping A Violent Environment) and at the Sheriff's Office in Hot Springs.
Sandra will be remembered for her loyal friendships, her generosity of time and spirit, but mostly for her devotion to and pride of her family. Stories about her grandchildren, in particular, were always available if anyone asked, and often when they hadn't.
Sandra is survived by her children, Scott (Jackie) Hansen; Kristine (Roger) Stevens; and Kimberly (Tom) Barber; her grandchildren, Beth (Tom) Zimmerman, Jordyn and Kaitlin Stevens, and Spencer Barber; her sisters, Dianne Schrader and Susan Solheim, along with nieces and nephews, and countless friends whose lives she touched over the years.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held at the First Lutheran Church Chapel, Sioux Falls, at 10:30 on Saturday, November 21. Because of Sandra's love of color, the family would request that you wear "happy" colors to the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests that those who wish to make a memorial donation in Sandra's name, do so to the Black Hills Chapter of the Red Cross, 1221 N. Maple Ave., Rapid City, S.D, 57701, or to W.E.A.V.E., PO Box 729, Custer, S.D. 57730, or to one of the R.S.V.P. offices, 333 6th St., Suite 8, Rapid City, S.D. 57701, or 1000 N. West Ave., #260, Sioux Falls, SD 57104.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs. Written condolences can be made at www.mccolleyschapels.com.
