Shirley Faye Denke, 81, of Custer, SD, passed away while in hospice care at her home, on Sunday, November 28, 2010.
Shirley was born July 12, 1929, in Dupree, SD, to Agnes Florence Marple (O'Donnell) and William Oscar Marple. She attended school through the 12th grade in Dupree, SD. She attained a nursing degree in Pierre, SD and practiced nursing in a number of locations in the Black Hills area. The memories of her time helping others were always with her.
Shirley married Elmer Martin Denke on December 8, 1951. Shirley and Elmer lived in many parts of the country during his time in the service, at one of these locations in Texas their daughter Alice was born. In 1953 they returned to Edgemont, SD where Elmer Worked at Igloo. While Shirley and Elmer lived in Edgemont, Shirley gave birth to four more children (Katherine, Laurel, Carol and William) over the course of eleven years.
Shirley enjoyed playing all kinds of games; her all time favorite was bingo. Her times spent at the different locations with a multitude of bingo cards spread out before her and marking device in hand were special moments in life. The Senior Center's Bingo night in Custer was always a not to be missed event.
She is survived by: her daughters, Alice (Chuck) Ollila Rapid City, Laurel (Charlie) Davis Box Elder, Carol (Paul) Niemann Custer, and her son, William (Laurie) Denke Sturgis; as well as 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, brother, Patrick (Janice) Marple Dupree, sisters, Mary (Bob) Shore Longview, TX, Francis (Roland) Eulberg Dupree and Carol Doherty of ID.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband Elmer, daughter Katherine and her brother William.
Shirley was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Custer, SD.
Visitation will be from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 2, 2010 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Jake Jacobson officiating.
Interment will be at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, December 2, 2010 at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
