His childhood was spent on the family ranch close to where Cascade Creek enters the Cheyenne River. He attended a small country school on Cascade Road and graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1941. Shortly after graduating he moved to his maternal grandparents ranch in Minnekahta Valley where he lived the rest of his life. Shirley spent many years working for Fall River County Highway Department blading roads, Hills Materials and later he worked for the State of South Dakota Highway Department.
