Shirley L. Rust, age 94, of Hot Springs, South Dakota, passed away on April 8, 2026, at Seven Sisters Living Center in Hot Springs, SD.
Shirley was born on April 30, 1931, in Gettysburg, SD, to Arthur and Mary Griese. She married Albert Nagel in 1950 and spent 32 years working on the farm, where she raised many chickens and helped run the dairy operation. Shirley was always a hard worker and took great pride in using her hands—whether gardening, sewing, cooking, or helping others.
Following the death of her husband, Albert Nagel, Shirley dedicated herself to caring for others, working for many years as a nurse’s aide in both South Dakota and Arizona. She married Paul Rust in 1990, and they enjoyed dancing, traveling and playing cards with friends. Her compassion, strength, and willingness to serve others were evident throughout her life.
Shirley is survived by her seven children: Al (Ann) Nagel of Aberdeen; Sue (John) Michalek; Barb (Jim) Miller of Edgemont; Mick (Lori) Nagel of Rapid City; Scott (Becky) Nagel of Waco, Texas; Bryan (Teresa) Nagel of St. Louis, Missouri; and Kalyn (Russell) Wright, her grandchildren: Kevin, Jason, and Joey Nagel; Mark and Laura Jones; Sheila Chester and Shane Miller; Jenna Klopfenstein, Jerred Nagel, Heather Manzano; Adam, Tony, and Tiffany Nagel; Danny Nagel; Angela Kostenecki and Sarah Harris; Justice and Dylan Yanke; and Micaela and Nathanael Garlow; along with 17 great‑grandchildren and siblings Virginia (Bob) Simon, Jerry (Juanita) Griese, Bill (Sandy) Griese, Janice (George) Riekens, Karen (Jim) Doerr and Pat (Richard) Weber.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Nagel; her parents, Arthur and Mary Griese; and her brothers, Larry and Bobby Griese.
Memorial services will be held at Emmanual Lutheran Church in Gettysburg, South Dakota, on Thursday, April 30, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor David Otten officiating.
