Shirley Christine Scherer, age 80, of Custer, SD, passed away on December 23, 2018, at the Custer Regional Care Center in Custer, SD.

Shirley was born on November 24, 1938, in Manderson, SD, to Joseph and Christine (Standing Bear) Mesteth.  She married Robert D. Scherer in Rapid City on July 28, 1965, and they enjoyed 53 years of marriage together.   Shirley was a tribal member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

Shirley was a gifted artist and her beadwork was both beautiful and helped provide for the family.  Her talents of crafting beadwork, drawing and painting were world-renowned and displayed in museums and in art collections.   Her favorite past times included walks in the woods, driving the backroads, rock hunting, picking wild berries, gardening and frequenting the casinos.   She will be well remembered for being loving, caring, helpful, funny and a hard worker.

Shirley is survived by her son, Robert (Mandy) Scherer of Martin, SD; daughters, Kathy Scherer of Erie, PA; Leslie Wendt of Edgemont, SD; Sherry Scherer (Wambdi Sea Boy) of Sisseton, SD; brother, Skee Mesteth of Manderson, SD; sister, Opal Calendar of Gillette, WY; and 12 grandchildren.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; daughter, Tina; granddaughter, Serenity; two brothers and three sisters.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Custer.
