Shirley Frances Sieg of Hot Springs, South Dakota passed away peacefully on August 13th, 2025 at Pine Hills Retirement Community in Hot Springs, South Dakota.  A celebration of her life will begin with a Rosary at 9:30 am, followed by a Catholic Funeral Mass at 10:00 am at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Hot Springs on August 23rd, 2025.  Committal service will be held immediately after Mass at Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs, SD followed by a luncheon at the church.

Born in Magnolia, Minnesota on July 3, 1925, Shirley lived most of her younger years in Jasper Minnesota.  After high school, she pursued her interest in healthcare and graduated in 1946 as a Registered Nurse from the highly acclaimed McKennan Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  Soon after, she responded to the need for skilled nursing care for polio patients in Hot Springs, where many traveled to benefit from the healing mineral waters in the area.  While working at the Lutheran Hospital in 1947, she met her beloved husband Harold Sieg, whom she married in 1948 and was blessed with 7 children.  Shirley was devoted to her work as a registered nurse, spending most of her professional career at the Veterans Administration. After retiring, she worked at the State Veterans Home, and assisted at the local jail.  Shirley loved to sing and dance, tend her garden, do Sudoku, assemble puzzles, play games of all kinds, sew and knit, and take Sunday drives in her father and mother's 1927 Chevrolet with Harold in the "Old Car Club." She loved spending time on their pontoon boat (holds the family record for the largest fish caught to date), traveling to places near and far, and was the chief grounds keeper for her ranch, often cutting the grass with her red tractor for 15 years after Harold's passing.

Shirley was preceded in death by her son Brian in 1977 and husband Harold in 2004.  She is survived by her children, Kay Huxford, Steve Sieg, Brad Sieg (Kelly), Craig Sieg (Carol), Charlene Sieg (Robin), and Christine Sorenson as well as one remaining brother, Bob DePauw (Celine).  Shirley has enjoyed life with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a few great-great grandchildren.

Shirley is remembered for her steadfast, unwavering integrity, fearless curiosity, quick wit, and generous heart.  She was a devoted mother to her 7 children and partner to Harold, her beloved husband. She cherished her time with family as well as her time alone in her country home, reflecting, listening to her songbirds, and enjoying the rhythms of the natural world that was home. She remained a healing warrioress to the end, always ready to meet the needs of the other…never leaving the oath she took as a young professional woman, to serve.  She taught us the value of living a simple life, and to be true to who we really are…Au Revoir, Shirley, until we meet again.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a memorial fund, yet to be designated.
