Shurlene J. Happs, age 75, of Hot Springs, SD, went to our Lord's house on January 29, 2012, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City.
Shurlene was born December 24, 1936 to Chester 'Pete' and Roberta Fleming. She was raised in the Oral, SD area. As a young girl, Shurlene enjoyed her involvement in 4-H, winning many ribbons for her various projects. On March 9, 1957, she married her loving husband Donald and had two daughters. She spent her time taking care of her family as a stay-at-home mother and wife. Most weekends were spent out at her folks' homestead in Oral, SD, just sitting around the table eating and visiting with friends and family that dropped in. Shurlene was involved with her children's education as well as their activities. She was a member of the PTA, a room mother and helped with Girl Scouts. When she found time for herself, she loved to put together a jigsaw puzzle or conquer a crossword puzzle.
After she lost her husband, Shurlene began working as a playground supervisor at the elementary school. All the children loved her and her feelings for them were mutual. She later became a lunchroom monitor where her loving relationship with the school children continued. Her service continued when she moved to Brookside Apartments where she volunteered to serve lunches. Shurlene also enjoyed playing bingo and having coffee with her lady friends. She also was a member of the VFW and was a proud member of the United Methodist Church in Hot Springs. She will be greatly missed by family, friends and everyone whose lives she touched.
Shurlene is survived by her two daughters, Melanie Happs of Rapid City, SD; Mitzie (Fred) Neugebauer of Gillette, WY; sister, Janet (Keith) Warner of Broomfield, CO; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.
Shurlene was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; infant daughter, Barbara; parents; grandparents and a niece.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. thru 6:00 p.m., Friday, February 3, 2012 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 4, 2012, at The United Churches in Hot Springs with Pastor Clint Walker officiating. Interment will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.
