Sidney Wilbur Berman, age 84, of Custer, SD, passed away at home with his family on October 14, 2016.

Sidney was born on February 8, 1932, in Brooklyn, NY, to Abraham and Esther (Belinsky) Berman. He graduated High School from Brooklyn. Sidney obtained degrees in Anthropology and Archaeology from the University of Mexico. In 1956, he met and married Ella Louise Crouse in Mexico. He was a gunsmith, and worked for the Museum of Natural History in NYC, he opened a commercial photo processing company in California, and enjoyed being a lapidary artist and avid gun collector.


Sidney's hobbies were rock hounding, Latin ballroom dancing, jazz enthusiast and loved hunting. He was a life member of the VFW, NRA, Palmach Gun Association, and Barbadian Council for the Arts Member of Jazz Association of Barbados, Historic Society of Barbados. Sidney was generous, caring, and a true mensch, a loving father, grandfather and always ready to share the vast knowledge with younger generations.

He is survived by his daughter, Zoe E. Berman-Yellin and grandson, Kenneth E. Dunne, both of Custer; son, Marc Berman of Yorktown Heights, NY; brother, Stuart Berman of Staten Island, NY; and grandchildren, Ilan Berman and Leah Berman.


Committal services were held 10:00 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, at the Custer Cemetery in Custer. Pallbearers: Regis Blodgett, Justin Blodgett, Richard Alm, David Gray, Tammy Learyn and Brandon DeNoma.

Sid's daughter Zoe and grandson will begin Shiva, a period of mourning and receiving friends, family and condolences at her home in Custer beginning after interment.


A memorial in Sidney's name has been made to benefit the Hot Springs VA Hospital Recreation Department.
