Sophie H. Murawski, 85, of Custer, SD, passed away December 13, 2009, at the Custer Regional Senior Care Center in Custer.
Sophie was born April 16, 1924, in Warsaw, Poland, to Joseph and Wanda (Milkowski) Prorok. She attended medical school via the underground during WWII until taken from her home and placed in a labor camp along with her mother. Sophie survived the Great War and met her future husband at a displaced person camp.
On July 10, 1946, she married Mitchell Murawski in Kassel, Germany. They lived in various places throughout Europe before immigrating to the United States in 1952. Sophie obtained a beautician's license and later a radiology technician's degree. She worked in the billing department of a downtown, Chicago, IL bank until moving to Eagle Grove, IA in 1980. There she worked at a manufacturing firm until her retirement in 1987. Sophie was a member of the Eagle Grove United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading and cooking as well as helping others and visiting with friends.
Sophie is survived by her daughter, Diana Edwards and husband Dan of Custer. She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Leszek; and husband, Mitchell.
Memorial Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 4, 2009, at the Eagle Grove United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove, IA, with Pastor Mike Agnew officiating. Interment will follow at the Eagle Grove Cemetery.
