Steven Roy Merkel, age 57, of Hot Springs, SD passed away February 3, 2008 at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home in Hot Springs, SD.
Steve served his Country in the United States Army from 1970 until his honorable discharge in 1972.
Steve returned to the family farm after discharge from the Army where he worked for several years. He eventually moved to Mobridge where he started his own yard and snow removal business. Steve met Jeanne his future wife in Yankton and they were married on February 19, 1983. They continued to live in Mobridge until they moved to the State Veterans Home in Hot Springs in the fall of 2006. Steve did not let any of his disabilities slow him down especially when it came to his favorite activity of fishing. He didn't just fish from shore he would jump into his friend's boat and head out to the deep waters where he said the fishing was the best. Steve was passionate when it came to helping family and friends and it did not matter what time of day it was he was there to help. The proudest moment of Steve's life was when he recommitted his life to God and was baptized in October 1977 with his wife Jeanne.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Jeanne Merkel of Hot Springs; mother, Rosemary Merkel of Mobridge, SD; two brothers, Gary (Beth) Merkel of Hot Springs and Alan (Cindy) Merkel of Spearfish, SD.
Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 7, 2008 at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home Auditorium with Chaplain Loyd Nielson officiating.
