Obituary

Ann Mawhinney, age 101, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2019, at Winner Long-term Care Center in Winner, SD.

A service will be held in the Chapel at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD on January 28, 2019 at 11:00 a.m.

Ann was born on a farm in rural Gregory County, SD, on November 20, 1917.  Growing up, Ann's family moved to Bull Creek township in Tripp County, SD in the early 1920's and Ann attended South Bijou Grade School.  She later graduated from Gregory High School with the class of 1936.

After graduation her typing skills enabled her to obtain gratifying work at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. for several years during WWII.  She also was a telephone operator in Winner, a waitress at the Corner Café in Gregory, and a Nurse's Aide in Winner and Hot Springs hospitals.

Her most enjoyable job was when Lee and Ann drove Pilot car escorts in Montana and Wyoming.Their CB handles were:  Lee was "Sunbeam" and Ann was "Moonbeam".

Ann was married three times, first to James Kelly, a service man from California, in 1938.  This marriage ended during WWII.  In 1947 Ann married a business man, Elmer Noah, in Gregory, SD on December 19, 1947.  They lived in Gregory and for several years they wintered in Arizona. This marriage ended in 1960.  While working in the Winner Hospital, Ann met Lee Mawhinney and they were married September 9, 1963.  They moved to Hot Springs in 1964 due to Lee's health so they could be close to the VA.  Lee and Ann were married for 36 years and enjoyed living in the Black Hills.  They loved to travel and made many friends.  Lee died December 7, 1999.  Ann continued to live in Custer until 2005 when at the age of 87 she moved to Golden Prairie Manor in Winner, SD.  She resided there until September of 2018.  She entered Winner Long-Term Care and passed away there January 13, 2019.  Ann will be laid to rest next to Lee at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.

Ann is survived by her son, Dennis Kelly of Winner; grandson, Sean Kelly and wife Tracy of Gregory; many nephews and nieces with two special nieces, Norma (Daughters) Storms and Charlene Cerney Dappen Pharr; and step-daughters, Tammi, Karen and Michelle and their families.

Preceding Ann's passing were her parents, James and Mary (Hlavka) Cerney; sister, Lillian (Cerney) Daughters; brothers, Ed and Emil Cerney and sister-in-law Polly Cerney
