Obituary

Theodore William (Ted) Soyland passed away August 28th, 2011, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Hot Springs, SD at the age of 83.

Ted was born March 26, 1928, on a farm near Holmquist, SD to Tony and Mabel (Holscher) Soyland. He grew up in the Day County area and attended school in Holmquist and Webster, SD and Olive, California.

On July 27, 1948, Ted married Betty Williams of Webster, SD at Anaheim, California. To this union were born 3 sons: David, Gary and Rick.

He served in the US Army in the late 1940s, mostly in Japan and Korea as a military policeman. After he was discharged Ted worked for John Mansville Mfg. Company in California, for the city of Wessington Springs, as Manager of the Rockham grain elevator and as a truck driver for several construction companies. In 1980, Ted retired due to ill health and lived in Orient and Faulkton, SD before entering the Veterans Home in Hot Springs in 2004.

Ted loved his home and all the friends he made at the veterans home. He took great pride in serving as president of the resident's council and took part in all the activities available at the home. His hobbies included gardening, fishing, billiards, woodworking, reading and he was an avid card player.

Ted is survived by one son, Rick Soyland of Faulkton, four grandchildren, four great granddaughters, two great grandsons and one great, great granddaughter, one brother, Scott Soyland (Cheryl) of Piedmont, one sister, Bonnie Kirchmeier of Waubay, many nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Tony and Mabel, his wife, Betty, one sister, Juanita Morris, and two sons, Chief Warrant Officer 3rd class David P Soyland, 101st Airborne Division Pilot – MIA and Chief Warrant Officer 3rd Class Gary D Soyland, Retired.

A Memorial Service and Burial will be held at a later date at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
