Thomas R. 'Tom' Davis, Sr., 85, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away January 30, 2014, at the Golden Living Center Prairie Hills in Rapid City, SD.
Tom was born in Hamilton, MO, August 5, 1928, the third of four children to Amos 'Tinsley'. and Alpha B. (Madden) Davis. The family lived in Hamilton until Tom was three and then moved to a farm near Lenexa, KS in Johnson County, where he grew up and completed elementary and high school. Farming was Tom's occupation during this time until after high school. At the age of fifteen Tom started working after school as a mail handler at the Kansas City railroad terminal until age seventeen at which time his left leg was crushed in an accident. After many months in the hospital, Tom started his own small truck line in Kansas City until the flood of 1951. At this time be became a bus driver for the Argentine Transit Line and Missouri Pacific driving between Olathe, KS, and Kansas City.
In 1953, Tom married Norma Jean Hullinger in Bethany, MO, and they moved to South Dakota. This union was bless with four children, Thomas R., Jr.; Elizabeth Susan; Kathryn Marie and Stephen E. In 1968, while driving for Continental Trailways, Tom moved to Crow Agency, MT, and opened an "Indian Trading Store" until a fire destroyed the business. Tom then bought an over the road truck, driving long hauls across the U.S. Tom moved back to Hot Springs and began raising exotic animals (chickens, goats, horses and other animals).
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Norma of Hot Springs; children, Thomas Davis, Jr. of Wasilla, AK; Elizabeth (Mark) Eby of Billings, MT; Kathryn (Casey) Barnes of Gillette, WY; Kenty G. Davis of Kansas City, KS; brother, Lawrence 'Larry' (Lou) Davis of Shawnee, KS; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents; son, Stephen; brother, Tinsley; and sister, Alpha Mae Darnell.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 7, 2014, at The United Churches with Pastor Clint Walker and Pastor Paul Smith officiating. Interment will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Tom's name to benefit the Hot Springs Senior Center in Hot Springs.
