Todd Evan Holloway, 58, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2017, in Hot Springs, SD, surrounded by his loved ones following a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Todd had been in Colorado receiving medical care for the past 4 months, but wished to return to South Dakota for what remained of his life. Through the assistance of his sons, Kyle Holloway, and Cole Richards; sisters, Susan Holloway Loamanu, Cathy (Russell) Stewart; and his longtime friends, Mary Bledsoe, Margaret Evans, Mark Whitford and the wonderful staff at Grace of the Pines Hospice, he was able to have his wish fulfilled. A series of absolute miracles occurred so that Todd could be at home with his family and loved ones when he passed on to the next world. This was his greatest wish, and we want to thank everyone for the prayers and love and encouragement provided to Todd and all of us during this time.
Todd was born April 16, 1959 in Richmond, VA, to Gordon and Barbara (Eugster) Holloway. Prior to moving to Hot Springs, the family lived in Utah, Virginia, Oregon, Illinois, and North Dakota. Todd completed his senior year of High School in Hot Springs, graduating in 1977. Todd was always interested in cooking, and his first job was doing so at A&W. He worked as a cook at Boyd's Family Restaurant for several years. It was here that he met his wife, Mary, and her sister, Margaret. It was a magical time of his life and he really enjoyed his boss and his workmates. He loved all the frivolity that surrounded them at work and outside as well. Much could be said about the activities at that time, but what happened at Boyd's, stayed at Boyd's!
Todd was a very hard worker through the years, many times juggling more than one job concurrently. In addition to Boyd's, Todd also worked as the head cook at Country Corner Café, Dakota Rose Restaurant, as well as the VA Hospital. Todd worked as a jailer at the Hot Springs jail and when he became physically unable to continue with that position, he became a dispatcher. He dispatched until he was no longer physically able to do so. Through his work, Todd developed very close relationships with many local individuals. Todd also served in the Air National Guards during the mid 1980's, and was very proud to have served his country.
Todd's eldest son, Loren Ray Holloway, was born November 10, 1985. Todd married Mary Whitford on February 1, 1989. They added a son, Kyle Gordon, to their family, which also included Cole Richards. Although this marriage dissolved, Todd remained very close to Mary and her entire family. He was especially close to her mother, Irene Whitford, and considered her as a mother to him as well.
Over his vacations, Todd often went to Utah and worked with his uncle in construction, learning carpentry skills through this work. He enjoyed working on his homes and built very nice decking and other improvements at many of the homes he lived in over the years.
Todd began noticing symptoms of numbness and weakness around 1994, and received a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis in 1996. This was a very life changing condition as he had been accustomed to working 60-70 hours per week, as well as being very active at home prior to becoming ill. It was determined that he had the non-remitting form of Multiple Sclerosis and he went from a very active man to being dependent on a wheelchair within a short two-year period. Despite this, Todd always remained positive and lived his life to the fullest. He spent a period of time in a nursing home, but decided that he really wanted to live as independently as possible. He then moved to an apartment that could accommodate his needs. He successfully lived there until his health declined over the past year.
Todd is survived by his son, Kyle (Leticia) Holloway; stepson, Cole (Gloria) Richards; 3 grandsons, Noah; Marcus; Levi; siblings, Susan Loamanu; David Holloway; Tammy Peterson; Gary Holloway; Cathy (Russell) Stewart; step-mother, Nannette Holloway; and his very special fur baby, Nemo.
Todd was preceded in death by his parents, Barbara and Gordon Holloway; son, Loren; sister, Linda Lother; brothers, Gregg; Brent; his other fur baby, Chloe; as well as many close friends and other family members.
A memorial gathering was held May 14, 2017, at Chamberlain McColley's Funeral Home in Hot Springs.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 10, 2017, at the Church of Jesus Christ-Latter Day Saints in Hot Springs. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.
A memorial in Todd's name will be established with the Multiple Sclerosis Research Institute.
