On Thursday, March 28, 2024, Velva LaDonna Plant, passed away at the age of 88 at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital. The fourth-born of five children, Velva was born on September 22, 1935, in Sisseston, SD, to Rudolph & Thelma Elizabeth Harrison Horstman. She was a graduate of Peever High School and married Herbert "Herb" Ottis Plant on June 3, 1956, in Sisseton, SD. Velva and Herb raised four sons, Gene, Mark, Terry, and David, and one daughter, Lisa.
Shortly after their union, Herb and Velva moved to Watertown, SD where she worked as a teacher in a one-room school until their move to Sioux Falls, SD in 1957. Velva and Herb eventually moved to Hot Springs, SD and Velva exclusively focused on raising their children and honing her homemaking skills. When she wasn't busy tending to the needs of her own family, she worked cleaning others' homes and was a sales representative for Avon. Upon Herb's retirement, they made their final move to Provo, SD where she proudly worked for the USPS until their local shutdown.
Velva was a lover of red roses and a good game of cards. She also enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, always showing support for their various activities. While Herb played drums for his band, Velva was known for traveling with him and enjoying a great evening on the dance floor. One might even say she sure knew how to cut a rug.
