Obituary

Vivian Rose Alcorn, age 94, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away October 1, 2013,at the Veterans Medical Center in Hot Springs.

Vivian was born October 18, 1918, in Pilger, NE, to Ben and Viora (Perkins) Parr.

She graduated Valedictorian from Norfolk High School, Norfolk, NE at the age of 16, and went on to graduate with high honors from Iowa State College in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics.

Vivian served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 32nd General Hospital in Germany from May 1943 to December 1945. She worked as a dietitian at Cook County Hospital in Chicago before and after her military service from 1942 through 1943 and 1946 through 1947, the VA Hospital in San Fernando, CA from 1947 through 1960, Anaconda Community Hospital from 1961 through 1971 and additional dietetics jobs for hospitals, church and the Head Start Program , and the VA Medical Center in Hot Springs, SD, from 1971 until her retirement in 1979.

In 1948, Vivian married John Haldane, to this union two children were born, Mike and Benetta. John Passed away in 1959. In 1960, she married Thomas Kelly, to this union one child, Patsy was born, Tom passed away in 1970. In 1989 she married William Alcorn, "the love of her life". Bill had five adult children, Mike, Judy, Pat, Sue and Bob. Bill passed away in 2002.

Vivian was a member of the American Dietetics Association for 70 years, a member of NARFE Chapter 0810, a charter member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Daughters, and a life member of the American Legion of Anaconda, MT.

She was very independent and worked hard to provide for herself, her family and to assist others. She loved to read and had a big desire to learn, she was a wealth of knowledge in all areas if she didn't know an answer she would research, she loved to watch sports especially football and baseball and liked to place a small wager now and then amongst family. She enjoyed cooking for her family and church, and loved helping her children and grandchildren with homework and projects. She enjoyed going to church and church social events. Vivian was a dedicated and loving mother, grandmother and friend, she was never selfish, she dedicated her life to God and her family and friends and service to her church and community.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands and her step-son, Mike Alcorn.

Vivian is survived by her son, Mike (Patty) Haldane of Anaconda, MT; daughters, Patsy (Rob) Davis of Hot Springs; Benetta (Vern) Rodacker of Anaconda, MT; step-sons, Pat (Brenda) Alcorn of Red Lake Falls, MN; Bob (Glenda) Alcorn of Gordon, NE; step-daughters, Judy (Steve) Kerkhoff of Rapid City, SD ; Sue (Ken) Hubbard of Lincoln, NE; daughter-in-law, Jeaneen Alcorn of Rochester, MN; God-son, Mel Pence of Hot Springs; eight grandchildren, Rob Gardner, Mike Haldane, Jennifer Haldane, Kristie Hansen, Andrea Booth, Sean Pence, Nichole Pence, and Melanie Pence and numerous great-grandchildren and step- grandchildren.

Vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, October 4, 2013, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Hot Springs.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 5, 2013, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with Fr. Kerry Prendiville officiating.

Burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Vivian's Name to benefit St. Anthony's Catholic Church Building Fund and Prairie Hills Transit.
