Obituary

Wayne Albert Layton, 53, of Sumner, WA, previously from Cheyenne WY, passed away.   He was born August 2, 1973, in Wheatland, WY. Wayne graduated from Guernsey-Sunrise High School in 1992 and from the Power Plant Technology portion of Bismarck State College in 1995.

His career consisted of head operator at Frontier Refining (now Sinclair HF) from 1996-2017, owner of the Redwood Bar and Lounge from 2017-2021 and laborer/groundsman at Mastec from 2021 through 2026.

Wayne had a big smile and a big heart. He made sure everyone around him was taken care of and would ensure they were having fun, no matter what they were doing. He was a hardworking, dependable, fun-loving, big guy who lived every moment full throttle. A free spirit and a non-conformist, he did things the way he wanted to. He very much carved out life to his liking. He had an edgy sense of humor, never took life too seriously except here it truly counted (family, friends, work, etc). Wayne was a son, brother, grandfather, uncle, friend and life of the party!

Wayne spent his time partying, fresh water and deep sea fishing, riding motorcycles, hunting, attending hard rock concerts, playing poker, camping, traveling (mostly to Mexico), being an auto enthusiast/mechanic, doing carpentry work and playing basketball. He was known for having a big appetite, collected cars, music, tools, fishing gear and tattoos.

Wayne is survived by his mother, Louise Snow; brother, Joe (Maria) Layton; son, Randy (Amber) Layton; daughter, Angel Layton; granddaughter, Isabella Layton; nephew, Benjamin Layton and nephew, Brandon Layton.

He was preceded in death by his father, Keith Layton.

Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 20, 2026, at Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Hot Springs, SD, followed by committal service at Edgemont Cemetery in Edgemont, SD.
