Obituary

William LaRay 'Bud' Soper, age 84, of Hot Springs passed away peacefully, January 13, 2008 at Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Home in Hot Springs, SD. surrounded by the love of his family.

William was born August 8, 1923 to Cecil and Edna Soper in Argyle, WI. He attended school in Nebraska. Bud proudly served in the United States Navy submarine Service Pacific Theater during World War II from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945.

Bud united in marriage to Bertha M. Dieckmann on June 1, 1946 in Harrison, NE. He was employed with C&WRR from 1946 through 1954. Bud, along with his family moved to Jackson Hole, WY in 1954 where he began his career with the Grand Teton National Parks Service. In 1967 he transferred to Wind Cave National Park and worked until his retirement in 1986.

Bud was a longtime member of the VFW, American Legion and Elks Club. He was very proud of his community and served as a good steward to the land that he loved and cherished. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting or just enjoying nature. He was an excellent carpenter and could fix anything. Bud had a strong love of his family and was a special husband and father. Friends also meant a lot to Bud, he enjoyed many afternoons drinking coffee and visiting with his coffee clutch buddies. There were never strangers in Bud's life, only people he had not met.

Grateful to have shared in his life are his wife, Bertha 'Bert' Soper of Hot Springs; two sons, David Soper of Hot Springs; Kelly Soper of Carson, WA; daughter, Penny (Joe) Wager of Hot Springs; five grandchildren, Davona Eisenbraun; Travis Soper; Shea Zeller; Melissa Mokler; Lindsi Zeller; five great-grandchildren, Jake Tackett; Theila Eisenbraun; David Eisenbraun; Graci Soper and Cali Mokler.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 17, 2008 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 18, 2008 at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs with Rev. Peter Dahlberg and Pastor Loyd Nielson officiating. Committal services will be held 2:30 p.m., Friday, January 18, 2008 at Black Hills National Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Sturgis Honor Guard.
