William "Bill" Wells, 73, passed away Friday, June 21, 2013, at his home in Custer.
The youngest of 12 children, Bill was born on December 6, 1939, in Lapeer, MI, to Harry and Jean (Peck) Wells. He attended school in Metamora, MI; and Fairhope, AL. After his military service with the US Air Force (1959-1969), he moved to Sioux Falls, SD, and then to Lennox, SD. While working 30 years at the John Morrell meatpacking plant in Sioux Falls, he was also a union steward for UFCW-Local 304A. Upon retirement, he moved to Custer in 1999.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Wells, Custer; Brian Wells (Emily), Elkpoint, SD; Camille Wells Cressman, Brandon, SD; two children from a prior marriage include Valorie Wells and Regina Wells of Fairhope, AL; grandchildren, Calvin Cressman, Nicole Wells, and Natalie Wells; three siblings, Betty Chapple, Saginaw, MI; Carolyn (LaVern) Haver, Fairhope, AL; and Bob Wells of Jasper, AL.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Lincoln, Grant, Lee, Arnold, Helen, Clara, Mildred, and Dorothy; and his grandson Kendall Cressman.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2013, at the Custer Community Church with Pastor Bill Comfort officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the National Veterans Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Custer Humane Society and the Custer Community Church Allen Organ repair project.
