Winthrop 'Winnie' Maciejewski, age 81, of Custer, SD, passed away December 27, 2012, at the Custer Regional Senior Care in Custer.
Winnie was born April 30, 1931, in Merriman, NE, to Edward and Ethel (Hubbard) Maciejewski. In 1938, when he was 7 years old, he moved with his family to Martin, SD, where they lived on a farm raising cattle, pigs, chickens and turkeys and where he attended a country school. It was at this time that Winnie learned to do chores and enjoyed taking care of the animals.
Winnie left home in 1956, moving to Redfield and worked on a dairy farm for the nest sixteen years, taking care of over 100 head of cattle. When the business was sold in 1972, he found work in a carpentry shop, then as a janitor. Winnie left Redfield in 1976 after twenty years, and lived near Johnson Siding for a year. He then moved to Gordon, NE, working on a ranch. Hill City was his next move and he spent thirteen years there working in the saw mill. He also lived in Mellette, then Sturgis. As his health changed, he moved to Colonial Manor Nursing Home, now the Custer Regional Senior Care.
Winnie's interests included horseshoes, playing pool and traveling. He also enjoyed playing cards, bingo, puzzles and outing to the senior center for dinner and being on the resident council. Winnie particularly enjoyed visitors and van rides around the Black Hills area.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer with Fr. Tim Hoag officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at the Lee's Park Cemetery near Taylor, NE.
