Obituary

Zigmund (Ziggy) Edward Maciejewski, 85 years old, of Custer, SD, passed away on May 13, 2015, at Crestview Care Center in Chadron, NE.

Zigmund was a quiet and devoted family man. Everyone, but especially children, found him to be a wise and warm friend. He was hard working and faithfully devoted to his religion, although he managed to maintain a bit of a stubborn streak true to his heritage.

Zigmund attended school in Martin, SD, at Wonderview School where he graduated the 8th grade. He worked at the family farm/ranch until entering the U.S. Army and serving overseas in Korea until 1958. After returning from the service he spent the next five years as a ranch hand in the sand hills of Nebraska. Zigmund did custom harvesting all over the Midwest. He came to the Black Hills in 1963, making a career in logging where he met and married his wife, Short, in 1967. They were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Lead, SD. In September 1968, their first son, Larry, was born and the family moved to Custer, where he continued logging until he started working at the Custer Sawmill. A second son, Lonnie, joined the family in 1972. After retiring from the sawmill and a successful battle with cancer, Zigmund went to work at The Fort with his primary duties being the care and feeding of the bears, Bonnie & Clyde. After true retirement, he spent countless hours as a volunteer at the Custer VFW Post #3442 where he was a life member. Zigmund also served as part of the Post Honor Guard for many years and was also a life member of the Custer Senior Citizens where he spent most days shooting pool, playing cards and volunteering as the bingo caller and helping with most center projects.

In 2014, he moved to Crestview Care Center in Chadron, making more friends. He resided there until his passing.

Zigmund is survived by his sons, Laurence (Aleesia) of Custer; Lonnie of Salt Lake City, UT; brother, Leland (Pat) of Hot Springs, SD; sisters in law, Wanda (Dennis) of Hay Springs, NE; Sherry (John) of Louisville, KY; special sister in law, Carrie (Rick) of Custer; brother in law, Gary of Sioux Falls, SD, four grandchildren, Drew, Billy, Page and Noveli, one great grandchild, Addison, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 41 years, Inez (Short), his sister, Wanda and his brother, Winthrop.

Wake services will be held 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Custer. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at the Saint John Baptist Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Custer Cemetery in Custer.
